New A/V Production Elective Will Teach Students How to Create Engaging Digital Content

PA Distance is thrilled to offer high school students a brand new A/V Production elective course for the 2022-2023 school year. This A/V course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help students understand the skills and path required to succeed in modern-day audio-and video-focused careers. 

Using tools and equipment in the new STEAM Hub, the course will cover various topics in audio-video production, such as camera, audio, and lighting techniques and the editing and assembly of video products. A/V Production teacher Mr. Dayka plans to incorporate a variety of hands-on assignments, cross-curricular collaborations, and career education & work-focused projects throughout the course. Students will work in front of and behind the camera to bring their ideas to life. 

“I’m most excited for the student interaction and student-led activities,” he said. “I’m excited to see what they create and accomplish in this setting. They are already on their phones, computers, and devices as it is, so with some structure, I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do with the technology.” 

Mr. Dayka is planning a community project to help bridge the gap between our students across the state to showcase their diverse interests and backgrounds. 

“I want my students to potentially interview their neighbors and members of their local community to tell the story of what makes their area special,” Mr. Dayka explained. 

During the course, students will be using their provided Chromebooks with built-in webcams/speakers alongside web-based audio and video editing programs introduced by Mr. Dayka. They are also welcome to use any personal equipment they may have as well. 

In addition to equipment used at home, Mr. Dayka plans to use the new A/V Production rooms in the STEAM Hub to their full extent. The rooms contain audio and video equipment like cameras, microphones, a large green screen, computer monitors, audio and video mixers, and editing software. 

“Using some of the technology we have at the school, I can show my students how to take the audio and video content they’ve created remotely and combine it with their classmates to make something collaborative,” Mr. Dayka explained. “Then, we can share it with the school community to showcase their efforts and the skills they’ve learned in class.

“We would also love to see other teachers and staff members use the STEAM Hub so that students can virtually direct them in front of the camera,” he added. 

The course will also take ownership of the weekly school announcements to make relevant news into a video format that is easily digestible for PA Distance students, parents, and staff. 

“Students are also more than welcome to come to the STEAM Hub, in person, to work with the equipment hands-on,” he noted. 

“I hope that after getting a taste of the video production world in this course, students will have a better understanding of what it takes to pursue a career in this field,” Mr. Dayka said. “It might help them realize it’s what they want to do when they graduate.”
