Community Highlight: Tioga and Potter Counties

Families of PA Distance Charter School students in Elkland (Tioga County) and Galeton (Potter County) have come together to form their own community. They visit each other, get involved with the school, and provide feedback regarding their child’s educational experience.

Northern Central Pennsylvania is made up of beautiful mountains, rolling hills, and extraordinary views. Among this impressive landscape lies Elkland and Galeton, two small towns within Region 2 at PA Distance.

Recently, several PA Distance families realized the potential of establishing a group for the purpose of discussing school-related matters.

Participants also hold a number of their own events throughout the year. Some include tortilla making, stress ball making, cake decorating, maple syrup farm tours, and more.

“We always have an absolute blast [at events] and are welcomed by local librarians and other community members,” said one parent.

Miss Messina started at PA Distance in January of 2022. As a member of the Community Engagement Team, she provides families with a variety of resources and travels across Pennsylvania in order to host help sessions and hands-on events.

One of her favorite outings that she has organized was cake decorating at Elkland Area Community Library. She recalls how rewarding it was to see everyone come together for such an enjoyable day.

“The PA Distance families in Northern PA have been so welcoming to me and we have had a lot of fun! Cake decorating was a great time because most people could make it and we all got to be together. We laughed, ate sprinkles, and made a mess of icing,” she joked.

Miss Messina would like to see everyone during upcoming community hours. She would also like to promote the Mobile Art Show and Sky Zone events happening throughout the state within the next few months.
