The law requires that all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants residing in the U.S. (permanent resident aliens) register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of their 18th birthday. You may register by mail (forms available at any Post Office) or through the internet at www.sss.gov. Registration allows you to remain eligible for important programs, such as the HOPE Scholarship, college work study, student loans and federal grants for college, employment by Federal and State Government, etc. Remember, a person turning 18 is required to register during the period of time beginning 30 days before, until 30 days after his/her 18th birthday (this is a 60-day window).
