National School Choice Week 2023

I Love My School Artwork (1)-1

Throughout this week, we recognize the importance of School Choice, or the ability of every family to decide the educational option that is best for their child. While some children may succeed in an in-person classroom, others might benefit from a magnet, charter, online, private, or home learning environment.

Listen to some of our students, parents, and staff talk about School Choice and why it is important to them in this video:

This year’s National School Choice Week (January 23-28, 2023) provides our community with a chance to show off our school spirit and spread the word about how we are making a positive difference in the lives of our students. As a school, we plan to showcase family stories, artwork, and much more on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn at the end of this celebratory week.

Looking to join in the fun? Check out this week’s schedule at PA Distance for ways you can show your support:

  • Monday, January 23: The Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools (PCPCS) will host a statewide charter school rally from 11 am to 12 pm in the Pennsylvania Capitol Rotunda (501 North 3rd Street in Harrisburg). After the press conference, families and educators will visit lawmakers to share their stories in support of public school choice. PCPCS estimates more than 1,000 charter school stakeholders will participate in the day’s events.
    • The PCPCS press conference will include remarks and musical performances by PA STEAM Academy and Reach Cyber Charter School students along with 25 charter schools based in Allentown, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, York, and other municipalities.

  • Tuesday, January 24: Wear Yellow Day
    • We ask that all PA Distance students, parents, and staff wear the color yellow to celebrate National School Choice Week. Students and parents will have the opportunity to submit a photo or video of themselves wearing yellow so we can share it on our social media! Each student who submits a photo will receive an “I Love My School” wristband and several “I Love School Choice” stickers in the mail.
    • Submit your picture or video here.

  • Friday, January 27: Recap of the week as we share the pictures/videos/stories sent to us!

  • Saturday, January 28 from 11 am-2 pm at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center:
    School Choice Fair
    • This fun event will include live music, free snacks and drinks, a balloon artist, face painting, a photo booth, a scavenger hunt, and information about School Choice and National School Choice Week. You will also have an opportunity to meet with other students and families with similar educational interests.
