If you're researching an online middle school in Pennsylvania for your child, this page walks through how the school day works, what students learn, the team behind every classroom, and how middle schoolers stay socially connected.
How Does Online Middle School Work?
PA Distance’s virtual middle school program incorporates synchronous Live Classes and asynchronous Independent Lessons.
Live Classes
Live Classes are real-time virtual sessions where students log in and learn directly from PA-certified teachers. These meetings mirror the structure of a traditional classroom, with direct instruction, group discussion, and real-time Q&A. Live classes meet three times a week, 45 minutes each, for the four content areas: math, ELA, social studies, and science. Health & Wellness, music, art, and computer elective courses meet two times a week in live classes.
Independent Lessons
All of our online middle school courses include required independent work outside the live class. Independent Lessons are critical to the overall instruction and learning. Each course assigns lessons on days the Live Class is not in session, with about 30 to 45 minutes of required assignments that prepare the student for the next day's live learning class. Teachers monitor progress on independent work and provide feedback throughout the week, so the lessons stay tied directly to what's covered in Live Classes: they're not isolated, self-paced software.
This blended learning approach gives middle schoolers in grades 6–8 a school day that's both rigorous and adaptable.
Dave Anney, Middle School Principal
“In our online middle school, students get the personalized support they need—academically, socially, and emotionally—to grow with confidence and thrive from home.”
What a Day in Our Online Middle School Looks Like
Middle school students at PA Distance complete about 5.5 hours of school each day (5 hours for grade 6). Our virtual middle school day is structured to balance live instruction with focused independent work, so students stay engaged without burning out.
Here's how a typical day breaks out:
Morning live classes: Core academic blocks in math, ELA, science, and social studies, each meeting three times a week for 45 minutes.
Independent lesson time: 30 to 45 minutes per course on days that the subject doesn't have a live class, used to prepare for upcoming lessons or reinforce earlier concepts.
Electives: Health & Wellness, music, art, and computer courses meet twice a week, giving students room to explore interests beyond the four core subjects.
Office hours at 3:00 p.m.: Every weekday, students can meet with any teacher virtually for additional help on assignments, including teachers they don't see that day.
Students aren't limited to scheduled class times if they have questions. Teachers are reachable between sessions, and the daily 3:00 p.m. office hours block makes help consistent, predictable, and easy to access.
Middle School Curriculum & What Students Learn
Beyond core subjects and electives, every middle schooler also takes a year-long Crew course co-taught by teachers and the grade-level school counselor. Crew supports social and emotional learning through lessons grounded in the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) national model, covering topics like communication, healthy relationships, decision making, and the school's Core 4 behaviors: attendance, organization, self-advocacy, and independence.
Support for Every Middle School Student
With the help of our interventionists, counselors, teachers, and student support staff, we meet each student where they are and help them grow. PA Distance uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to develop our students academically, behaviorally, and socially.
Delivery of standards-based instruction and differentiated learning opportunities to meet the needs of students
Collection and analysis of multiple data points to support informed decisions regarding curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Implementation of a tiered system of support to differentiate programmatic interventions for all students
Student Support
Office Hours:
Students can meet any of their teachers for additional help on daily assignments. At 3:00 p.m. every day, students connect with their teachers virtually via video call, phone call, or chat.
Career & Work:
Every student goes through ourcareer education and work program to prepare them for life after middle school and into high school. Requirements vary by grade level.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
PA Distance uses PBIS to provide a behavioral support system to middle school students. PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools, building research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. Middle school students complete monthly projects to show their progress on what we call our Core 4: the four behaviors students need to succeed in school and life: organization, self-advocacy, working independently, and attending school.
Special education and counseling Students with IEPs or 504 plans receive support through our special education services, including personalized instruction and accommodations delivered within our cyber middle school environment. School counselors are also available to support students through the social and emotional shifts that come with the middle school years. Parents and learning coaches are part of every student's support team.
Middle School Activities, Clubs, and Connection
Middle school is when friendships and shared interests start to define a student's school experience. PA Distance Learning makes that possible in a virtual setting through 20+ after-school clubs and regular in-person events held in regions across Pennsylvania.
Middle schoolers can sign up for clubs ranging from Dungeons & Dragons and Cooking Club to Gaming, art workshops, STEM challenges, and academic clubs. Each session runs once a week or every other week for an hour or two, with meeting times set by the club sponsor between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m.
Beyond clubs, students across Pennsylvania connect through field trips and regional meetups. Past events have included open houses at the Pittsburgh Zoo, bowling outings at Hiester Lanes, behind-the-scenes tours at Texas Roadhouse, and a Philadelphia Flyers front office panel. Virtual field trips, online game nights, and community service projects round out the calendar.
Students who want involvement beyond what PA Distance offers may also participate in their resident school district's extracurricular activities. Pennsylvania's Charter School Law allows this when the student meets the district's participation requirements, and PA Distance does not offer the same activity.
The bottom line: virtual school doesn't have to mean isolated school. Learn more on our activities page.
