What to Expect as a PA Distance Parent or Guardian

At PA Distance, we believe that strong family involvement is a key ingredient in student success—especially in a virtual learning environment. While we never ask you to take on the role of a teacher, we do view you as a vital learning partner and facilitator in your child’s journey.

Whether you’re new to online learning or just need a refresher, here’s a guide to what’s expected of you as a parent or guardian at PA Distance.

Your Role: Facilitator, Communicator, Partner

As a PA Distance parent or guardian, we ask you to:

  • Provide a safe, quiet, and secure space where your child can focus and thrive

  • Maintain an active high-speed internet connection for daily lessons and assignments

  • Communicate regularly with your child’s teachers, school counselors, and support staff

  • Monitor your child’s academic progress and attendance

  • Keep your contact information and required forms up to date

Essential Responsibilities

To help ensure your child has the support they need to succeed, parents/guardians are expected to:

🖥️ Tech & Learning Environment

  • Ensure your home environment is distraction-free and safe for learning

  • Maintain consistent access to high-speed internet

  • Have a basic understanding of email, Google tools, and the internet

  • Reach out to the Technology Department if you need help navigating the online systems

🗣️ Communication

  • Regularly check your email for updates, school news, and time-sensitive information

  • Keep open lines of communication with teachers, counselors, and principals

  • Notify the school if your child needs supply refills (printer ink, paper, materials, etc.)

📅 Orientation & Attendance

  • Attend your child’s Virtual Orientation Session with our Community Engagement Team

  • Ensure your child signs in and attends every school day according to our attendance policy

Blended Learning - Time Expectations Per Grade Level:

  • Elementary students (K–5): ~2.5 to 3.5 hours daily

    • ~2 hours of asynchronous work outside Live Learning sessions

  • Middle & High School students (Grades 6–12): 5.5 hours per day

    • A combination of Live Learning sessions and Independent Lessons

🧠 Ongoing Support

  • Facilitate your child’s learning as needed, especially for younger students or those in Special Education programs

  • Check grades regularly and reach out with questions or concerns

  • Comply with state and local testing requirements

  • Update your contact info, address, and health forms as needed
